Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the smaller airways in the lungs. Allergy usually starts the inflammatory process, but once underway, continues on its own. Then a variety of things can irritate the airways (allergens, viruses, cold air, exercise, etc.) causing wheezing, difficulty breathing, cough, or mucus.
NOTE: Additional therapy includes:
- LABA plus corticosteroid inhalers (Advair TM , Symbicort TM, ZenhaleTM)
- Singulair (montelukast)
- occasionally anticholinergics (Atrovent TM, Spiriva TM) or theophylline
